What does -4AN, -6AN, and so on actually mean?
Hoses and connector threads are usually specified in Dash sizes in motorsport. The Dash sizes refer to American Air Force and Navy (AN) specifications and are calculated as follows: Multiply the nominal hose diameters (specified internationally in inches) by 16. Thus, a 1/2” hose has the size Dash 8 and a 1” hose has the size Dash 16. The corresponding fittings and threads are also specified in Dash (AN). The most common thread type in motorsport is the tapered JIC thread (now SAE 37°), where the external thread has a convex cone and the internal thread has a concave cone of 37°, so a sealing ring is not required. The designation of JIC threads is either in Dash size, e.g., 3 JIC, or -3AN, or with the thread size in inches, e.g., 3/8 JIC, or 3/8x24 JIC. JIC threads, like metric threads, are specified with the actual diameter of the external thread.

In the table below, we provide the thread dimensions, as well as the corresponding hose inner diameters. Small tolerances are possible for hoses. For oil supply lines, we recommend -4 AN with 6mm hose, and for return lines, at least -10AN with 16mm hose inner diameter.
